Friends learning in pairs (FLIP) is an intergenerational volunteer tutoring program sponsored by Senior Citizens, Inc. By becoming  involved with the FLIP program, individuals 55 and older join the forces of thousands who are recognized leaders willing to give their time, talent, and energy to meet needs and fill gaps for children in local public elementary schools in grades k-4.
You will provide a quality experience in helping
to increase the reading skills of children identified by teachers as reading below grade level and at-risk failure. Reading is one on one with the students in your local elementary school for one day a week, two hours per day.
Volunteers receive training, free accident and liability insurance, limited travel reimbursement, ongoing support, recognition, and knowing you are making a difference in the lives in children that will last for generations to come.

Help a Young Child Become
a Better Reader

Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP), an intergenerational tutoring program of FiftyForward RSVP, needs more volunteers age 55+ for the 2011-12 school year. Volunteer tutors work with struggling readers at elementary schools in Davidson and Williamson counties and with struggling Math students in Williamson County.

Tutors meet with their students weekly and serve at least one school year. This time commitment enables volunteers to work one-on-one with the same students and monitor their progress. FLIP provides quarterly training, materials, and ongoing support.

Volunteer tutors should meet these requirements:
  • Pass a criminal background check and two reference checks
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Have a passion for reading
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Be able to volunteer during the school day
FLIP training sessions in Eastern Davidson County are scheduled for these dates:

New Volunteer Training:
  • Donelson, Thursday, August 4
  • Madison, Tuesday, August 23
  • More to be scheduled in September
Back-to-School In-Service Training:
  • Madison, Tuesday, August 30, 10 a.m.-noon
  • Donelson, Thursday, September 8, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Training dates in Central Davidson and Williamson counties will be announced soon.

To learn how you can become a FLIP tutor, contact Sandra Thomas at sthomas@fiftyforward.org or 615-743-3422.
